Story:
This film is widely considered to be a response to D. W. Griffith’s heavily racist feature film The Birth of a Nation, released 5 years earlier.
It tells the tale of an African-American woman, who struggles to raise the funds needed for a rural school for poor black children. The movie features racial violence under white supremacy, including the lynching of black people.
